Liverpool icon Jerzy Dudek has said that he once thought he had convinced Piotr Zielinski to sign for the Reds, with the midfielder this season winning the Serie A title with Napoli.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the former goalkeeper revealed that he had given the now-28-year-old midfielder a Liverpool shirt after he had been named Poland’s Young Player of the Year in 2016, with Zielinski even wearing the jersey on Polish TV in a now infamous image.

Whilst a move never materialised, Dudek has now since come out and said that he wished the midfielder had gone on to make the move to Anfield, with Zielinski this season playing a key role for Napoli in winning their first Scudetto in the 21st century.

Indeed, Liverpool are on the hunt for a midfield signing this summer, and Dudek will no doubt want Zielinski to be on Jurgen Klopp’s shortlist. The Anfield icon said on the Polish international: “He already received a Liverpool shirt when he became the Young Player of the Year in Poland.

“That shirt I gave him, I was thinking he was going to move to Liverpool and that would have been a good move. He is top of Serie A and I hope to see some Polish players at Liverpool as I felt really good there and the next Polish player at the club will be feeling good.”

Zielinski has been linked with a move to Liverpool for what feels like forever, and with the midfielder winning the league with Napoli this season, now could be the perfect time for Dudek’s dream to become a reality with the 28-year-old at the peak of his career.

England has always felt like a realistic destination for Zielinski, and with Liverpool in the hunt for central midfielders this summer, the Polish international could be an ideal signing the Klopp, with the Napoli star a player who could become a cult hero at Anfield.
