There’s a possibility Liverpool could try and sign £8m PL player if his team get relegated

There’s a chance that Liverpool could reignite their interest in Southampton centre-back Duje Caleta-Car this summer.

Caleta-Car is virtually certain to get relegated this season, having only joined Saints last year. And according to journalist James Pearce for The Athletic’s ‘Walk On’ podcast, this could lead to Liverpool taking a closer look at him.

“The only one possibly from Southampton would be Caleta-Car, the Croatian centre-back,” Pearce said when asked if the Reds may target any players relegated from the Premier League.

“Liverpool we know really do need to bolster themselves in that department this summer. Caleta-Car is definitely one they’ve looked at previously.

“I don’t know whether he’s still someone of interest at this point, but the fact that they’ve scouted him previously, and I think he’d been considered. I’d put that as a possibility.”

Liverpool look for Premier League bargains

As we get towards this time of the season, it’s normal that teams may look at some unexpected chances in the market. Few would have predicted Southampton to go down this season, but they’re on the verge of doing so.

As a result, their may be some opportunities to pick up some players who may otherwise have been unattainable.

Having said that, Caleta-Car is a strange one to pick out of that. Yes, Liverpool were reportedly close to signing him in January 2021. But since then he’s hardly given them reason to regret their failure to do so.

However, he would be a very cheap option to the Reds’ centre-back problem. After signing for Southampton for only £8m a year ago, they could hardly now expect to get too much more for the 26-year-old.

Still, there’s definitely far better alternatives out there for Liverpool, with one of Caleta-Car’s teammates possibly providing an answer.

Earlier in the season, Armel Bella-Kotchap was really turning heads. His performances since arriving at St. Mary’s last summer even earned him a German national team call-up aged just twenty. This also, inevitably, led to suggestions that Liverpool could be on his tail.

Given his age, potential and obvious quality, that would make much more sense than signing Caleta-Car. Let’s see whether there’s any movement on either.
