TalkSPORT pundit says it’ll be a ‘disgrace’ if current Liverpool star doesn’t get in the PL Hall of Fame

Liverpool vice-captain James Milner is a Premier League legend and should be recognised with a spot in the division’s Hall of Fame

That’s the view of TalkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy. Speaking on the radio station last night, the former Chelsea player went to bat for the ‘underrated’ Liverpool star.

“James Milner is an example for every young footballer. Can you imagine what he’s brought to Villa, Newcastle to those young players, to Leeds and Liverpool now. His career path is phenomenal, he is underrated,” Cundy insisted, to protests from co-host Jamie O’Hara.

“He’s proven to be one of the most versatile players you can have. He can play wide right, he can play midfield, he can play right-back. Do not underestimate the value of that to a squad. He is reliable, managers trust him, he’s now going to sign for Brighton, one of the most well run football clubs in this country, he rejected Everton from what I read today.

“James Milner will go down as a Premier League legend. He will be in the Hall of Fame one day, and if he’s not, it’s a disgrace.”

What more is there left to say about the legend that is James Milner? The 37-year-old has given everything for each and every club he’s played for over the last 20 years.

As reports last week appeared to confirm, the next club Milner will add to that list will be Brighton. Having spent eight successful years at Anfield the Yorkshireman’s contract will not be renewed ahead of 2023/24.

So, that means that after almost a decade, we now have just three games left to appreciate Milly in all his glory.

For some, that will be easy. There is a portion of the fanbase that – like Cundy, and former England U21 boss Stuart Pearce – see the No.7 as a brilliant, dependable player who can do a job pretty much anywhere. But for others, it will be a welcome goodbye for a player long past his peak. Truly, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Yes, Milner has been a wonderful servant for Liverpool and has won virtually everything there is to win. He has been crucial to that on and off the pitch and will leave a giant hole – off the field in particular.

And yet, at the same time the Reds can and will improve upon him. For years now Milner has been almost a last resort. While other teams turn to world-class options from the bench, Liverpool have had to make do with a player who is surely on his last legs.

That isn’t to denigrate Milner’s contribution, far from it. But the time is now right for all parties to move on. Regardless, the veteran has earned his legendary Premier League status. Some may not like it, but Cundy is right here.
