Liverpool will reportedly battle with Chelsea to sign AS Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana, who looks set to leave Ligue 1 this summer.

According to the Daily Star, the Reds will go toe-to-toe with their Premier League rivals for the 24-year-old’s signature, with the Daily Mail recently reporting that Monaco could sell Fofana this summer for as little as £22m.

Liverpool’s interest in Fofana has been a recent phenomenon, with reports of the Anfield side looking into the French international only emerging last week, though rumours over a summer move for the Monaco midfielder are snowballing fast.

Labelled as an ‘intense’ player as per the Daily Star, Fofana could be an ideal fit for Jurgen Klopp’s system given his versatility and ability to play numerous midfield roles, with the likes of Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara likely to be replaced this summer.

And Fofana is slowly emerging as a top target for Liverpool, with the Ligue 1 midfielder one of the best in the division and a player who could thrive in the Premier League if given the chance to play in the right system, such as Klopp’s at Anfield.

Liverpool’s interest in Fofana makes a lot of sense given how much work the Reds’ central midfield needs, yet with Chelsea also in the race, the Merseyside giants have to do all they can to secure the Frenchman’s signature in the coming weeks.

With Alexis Mac Allister set to sign for Liverpool, adding Fofana to the mix could all-but revive Klopp’s midfield into one of the best in the Premier League, though Chelsea could prove to be worthy opponents in the market if they can use their financial muscle to win this transfer battle for the Monaco man.
