Jamie Carragher couldn’t believe the chance Darwin Nunez missed in the first-half of today’s game with Brentford.
Nunez looked all set to latch onto a ball into the box with the score still at 0-0. But with the cross seemingly landing plumb on his forehead, the Uruguayan clean missed it.
It wasn’t exactly a sitter from Darwin, but if he’d made contact, he’d surely have scored. Sitting in the commentary box for Sky Sports, Carragher couldn’t get his head around it.
“It’s brilliant from Liverpool, great interplay from the attacking players,” he began. “Gakpo falls to the floor but he was instrumental in it initially.
“I just feel as though he’s going to head that and then he doesn’t fully go. It’s there for him. I can’t believe he’s missed that really.”
Nunez betrays lack of confidence
Nunez could really do with a goal at the moment. It wasn’t all that long since his last one – away at Leeds a couple of weeks ago – but his confidence looks really shaky.
Having seen his place in the side rescinded of late, that’s understandable. One way or another it hasn’t been a smooth ride of a first season at Liverpool.
Given another chance in the team today, it was an opportunity to go out and get that goal. He might yet do that, but he hasn’t looked especially likely in the first-half.
Despite Carragher’s claim though, we don’t think this was an especially bad miss from Nunez. He’s had a couple this season, but this wasn’t one to add to that collection.
Unfortunately though, the 23-year-old did then add one later in the half. Found perfectly by a lofted Trent Alexander-Arnold pass and clean through on goal, Nunez shanked a first-time finish high and wide from around six yards out. Not good enough, really.
With Liverpool looking in the mood today, the former Benfica man will hopefully get another opening. He’d do well to take it, or his confidence will sink even further.
