Frank Lampard suggests player Liverpool sold in 2019 has become brilliant now

Chelsea interim boss Frank Lampard has claimed that former Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke has always been a ‘high talent.’

Solanke spent just 18 months at Anfield between 2017 and 2019, having been signed from Chelsea. After scoring just one goal in 27 appearances, he was sold to Bournemouth for a princely £19m. The 25-year-old has rallied in the years since, though. Having registered 13 goal contributions in the Premier League this season, he’s doing really well.

Next up for Solanke is a meeting with former club Chelsea. And speaking via Football London today, Lampard spoke glowingly of the striker.

“I remember training with him. Clearly a high talent. I speak with the coaches at the academy a lot and they have a high regard of him,” he said.

“He’s still young, it’s good to see him performing so well. I’m pleased for him on an individual note because he has his origins here at the club.”

Solanke finally hits his straps

Solanke has been in really good form for Bournemouth over the last few weeks. As the Cherries have kicked on in their fight for survival, the forward has clicked into gear.

Over the last seven games he’s managed three goals and three assists. With survival almost assured for Gary O’Neil’s side, he can start looking forward to another year in the Premier League.

Still, it won’t be enough to make Liverpool – or Chelsea – regret selling Solanke. The Reds in particular made a brilliant profit on the one-cap England star and he’s never quite looked good enough for that level since.

But as Lampard points out, Solanke is still relatively young. If he can use this purple patch to take his game up a notch next year, he could still end up at a bigger club than he is now – with respect to Bournemouth.

A good game against Chelsea tomorrow would be another step towards that. Remarkably, Bournemouth could move ahead of the Blues with a win at the Vitality Stadium.

Lampard knows all about the threat the old Cobham youngster can pose.
