Liverpool would be taking a massive risk by signing Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips this summer.
The Reds have been linked with a move for the out of favour England star as they aim to overhaul their midfield. But according to former right-back Glen Johnson, it’s something they should be very wary of.
“Yes, the injuries would be an issue,” Johnson told GG Recon when asked about Liverpool’s interest in Phillips. “Liverpool should be aiming to compete with Manchester City, so signing a player that can’t get in their team is kind of like accepting having their second-string players and Manchester City will be believing that they’re miles ahead of Liverpool.

“Psychology-wise, it’s a move they should be wary of. Kalvin is obviously a very good player, but his injuries make this move a risky one for Liverpool.
“He needs to get fit and show that he’s good enough for Manchester City before another top club tries to sign him.”
Phillips not right for Liverpool
Liverpool signing Phillips is not something that should even be discussed this summer. The 27-year-old is so far away from what the Reds need right now.
Any midfielders who come through the door need to have exemplary fitness records. Of course, you can never predict the future with injuries. But signing anyone with any question marks over them is a big fat no.

For that reason alone, Phillips should be out of the reckoning. Even before arriving at City for £45m last summer he’d had numerous problems at Leeds. He’s a decent player but there are dozens of better options out there right now.
Some will disagree. Only last week Darren Bent was urging Liverpool to pursue a move for the England international. The sentiment being that the Reds can capitalise on his lack of game time to get a relative bargain.
But buying a current England player will never be a bargain. And as Johnson points out, Liverpool shouldn’t be bargain hunting from City’s bench.
Thankfully, we’re yet to see a truly credible source linking the Reds with Phillips. Fabrizio Romano even denied any knowledge of interest recently. Fingers crossed it stays that way.
