Everton are reportedly interested in signing James Milner at the end of this season as a free-agent signing, though the midfielder is close to a move to Brighton & Hove Albion.

90min claim that the Toffees, alongside Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, are all keeping tabs on the 37-year-old’s situation heading into the final weeks of the campaign, with Milner’s contract at Liverpool due to expire this summer.

As reported by Sky Sports News, Brighton are closing in on a deal to sign Milner, with the prospect of European football likely to be an alluring one for the former Manchester City star. However, Everton could make a shocking late swoop for the veteran.

It would be the first transfer of it’s kind for quite some years, and for Liverpool supporters, a club icon like Milner moving to Everton would be quite the shock considering how important the midfielder has been for Jurgen Klopp’s squad in recent years.

Moreover, with Milner earning a reported £120,000-a-week, the midfielder would be one of Everton’s most expensive players, something that the Goodison Park side likely can’t take on regardless of what division they’ll be playing in next season.

Everton signing Milner would be as incredible as it is unrealistic

Milner has been one of Liverpool’s most important players in their recent run of success, with the midfielder playing key roles in the Reds’ UEFA Champions League triumph as well as their Premier League title-winning season, and the veteran signing for Everton would be an incredible coup for the Toffees, but also unrealistic.

Given how long the 37-year-old has spent at Anfield, Milner uprooting to Goodison would be nothing short of sensational and treacherous, and the player himself likely knows that such a move will ruin his golden reputation with Liverpool.
