Evan Ferguson’s former coach has detailed how Liverpool chased the now-Brighton & Hove Albion star before the forward decided to move to the Amex Stadium.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Karl Lamb, who coached Ferguson for eight years at St Kevin’s Football Club, revealed that Liverpool were interested in Ferguson at a young age, alongside Everton and Manchester United. However, the striker opted to sign for Brighton.

With iNews reporting that the attacker could now be worth as much as £100m, the decision to move to the English south coach has proven to be a masterstroke from Ferguson, who this year has been one of the breakout talents in the Premier League under Roberto De Zerbi.

And as reported by 90min, Liverpool are again interested in Ferguson, though rumours strongly suggest that the 18-year-old attacker will sign a new contract with Brighton to continue his development. And for Lamb, the Reds missed their chance to land the attacker a few years ago.

The youth coach said: “Liverpool, Manchester United and Everton were in for him from an early age. It is an example of how smart he and his family are that once he went on trial with Brighton, he loved it. I think, if any massive clubs had come back in, he’d still have chosen Brighton.”

Ferguson has been one of the stories of the Premier League season, and with the Republic of Ireland international set for big things in the years to come, Liverpool really missed a trick in not signing the wonderkid when the chance was there some years ago.

With Ferguson now valued as highly as £100m, it is unlikely that we will see the Irishman at Anfield anytime soon, and Brighton have hit the jackpot in signing the County Meath prospect at the right time in his footballing development.
