Diogo Jota has admitted that Andy Robertson’s encouragement helped him score his decisive winner for Liverpool against Tottenham Hotspur.

Jota was the hero yesterday, as the Portuguese winger raced on to a loose pass from Lucas Moura in the last minute, before slamming the ball beyond Fraser Forster in the Tottenham goal.

Jota’s composure was highly impressive, given what had come before in the game.

Liverpool had somehow contrived to throw away a 3-0 lead and when Richarlison headed home in injury time, it looked it was going to be another frustrating outing at Anfield this season.

However, Jota simply refused to give up – even after seeing Liverpool’s lead disintegrate.

And it seems that Richarlison’s goal actually only encouraged the Reds to go in search of a winner.

“I remember Robbo telling me to go on because we usually play that long-ball and to go on and believe and you could feel that was already a good sign,” Jota revealed after the game, when speaking to Liverpool’s official site

“And we did that. We won the second ball, we played back and then played in behind and I could intercept that pass and score the winner.”

Big praise deserved

Both Jota and Robertson deserve great credit here, really.

It would have been easy for Liverpool’s players to have started to feel sorry for themselves after seeing their commanding lead disappear in the most heartbreaking fashion.

However, they showed great character to believe that the three points could still be obtained.

This current Liverpool team may not quite be ‘mentality monsters’ but their never say die attitude cannot be questioned.

And while Jota was gifted with his chance by an awful pass from Lucas Moura, it is still testament to his effort and belief that he was making the run to allow him to capitalise on the error in the very final seconds.
