£40m Tottenham player admits he’s been desperate to play at Anfield against Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur right-back Pedro Porro has admitted that he’s always wanted to play at Anfield against Liverpool.

Porro and his teammates head to Merseyside on Sunday looking for a first win at Anfield since 2011. It’ll be a first ever visit to the stadium for the January signing from Sporting Lisbon.

And speaking to tottenhamhotspur.com, Porro admitted that playing away at Liverpool will be something of a dream come true.

“Yes of course [he’s looking forward to playing at Anfield]. It’s another of those stadiums that I’ve always wanted to play at,” said the Spaniard. “Every player loves playing there. As for the match, we will go there to win.”

It would be a huge result if Porro and co can beat the Reds in their own backyard. Only Leeds United have managed it in the Premier League since Fulham in March 2021. But you never know.

Porro ready for Anfield battle

Porro has had a tough time at Spurs since joining for £40m on deadline day. Remarkably, he’s already on his third manager, with Ryan Mason now taking over from interim boss Christian Stellini.

But there were positives for him last night – the right-back scored a delightful equaliser to give Tottenham a point against Manchester United.

That will give him a confidence boost as he travels to Anfield for the first time.

As a very attacking full-back, Liverpool will look to catch him high up the pitch as much as possible. Part of the knock-on of Trent Alexander-Arnold changing roles has been that Andy Robertson tends to stay back a little more, though. As a result, the Reds will rely on whoever is playing left-wing to keep Porro hemmed in.

Over the last handful of games, that job has been Diogo Jota’s. But after Jurgen Klopp’s admission that the 26-year-old picked up a knock against West Ham United on Wednesday, Liverpool look set for a change.

That may not be good news for Porro, who will have to shackle either Luis Diaz or Darwin Nunez. Both pacier prospects than Jota, they’ll be looking to catch the former Sporting man out as much as possible. A good battle awaits for Pedro, we wouldn’t be looking forward to it quite so much if we were him!
