Pep Guardiola makes claim about Liverpool straight after his side beat Arsenal last night

Pep Guardiola has suggested that his Manchester City side were ‘lucky’ to have been pushed on by Liverpool over recent seasons.

City put themselves in the driving seat for the Premier League title last night, dispatching Arsenal 4-1 at the Etihad. The win puts them a point behind the Gunners with two games in hand. With seven games left to play, you just can’t see beyond Pep’s side for a third title in a row.

But speaking to BT Sport after the game, the Spaniard gave credit to the teams attempting to challenge City’s dominance.

“Why should I stop [trying to win]? When we are here we have to do it,” he began. “We are lucky as a team, I have to be honest, the way Liverpool push us in the previous season, after winning 100 points. Liverpool push us, and this season Arsenal. They made 50 points in the first leg, I could not expect to be in the position.

“Once we are there we try to win, always when we play, why should we stop? It’s not necessary.”

City on the march again

Well, here we are again. Barring an uncharacteristic collapse, the title looks set to be heading to the Etihad for a fifth time in six seasons.

It isn’t over just yet, and Arsenal may point to the fact that they’re still technically top of the table. But City smell blood during the run-in every year. Those waiting for them to drop points are left continually frustrated.

We know that very well, we feel to have been there too many times before. In reality it’s only twice that Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp pushed Pep all the way in the Premier League. Those two challenges have left permanent scars, though.

In a small way they perhaps wouldn’t like to admit, it might do Reds supporters some good to not put themselves through that this season. Let Arsenal drive themselves crazy while we watch on and make our plans for next season.

That might sound defeatist, but the fact remains that Liverpool don’t have the resources to compete year-on-year with City. Nobody does. That’s the whole awful truth.

No matter, the Reds will hopefully be back with a vengeance next year. Another season of City dominance and the rest of the country might start to wake up to the truth of what they actually are. As Arsenal wither away, it looks like it’ll be up to Liverpool to try and stop them. Mission accepted.
