Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic has now claimed Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk is one of the best defenders in the world.
Speaking on the FIVE YouTube channel with Rio Ferdinand, the Serbian claimed the centre-backs of old are a dying breed, but there are two exceptions in the modern game.
“So, I like to see young defenders,” said Vidic.
“We don’t have defenders to say, ‘oh, I like this guy’.

“Remember before; Nesta, Maldini, Cannavaro. Where are these defenders now?
“The last one is still playing at Paris Saint-Germain: Ramos. After him, tell me.
“Obviously, Liverpool; Van Dijk obviously.
“But we don’t have something to say, ‘wow, what a defender’.”
Vidic says Van Dijk is one of the best
This is an interesting take to hear, especially given the media debate surrounding Vidic and Van Dijk at the moment.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Jamie Carragher took to Twitter to argue the 31-year-old is the greatest centre-back of the Premier League era.
This includes being a far superior player to Vidic, who the Scouser points out, was demolished by Fernando Torres on a number of occasions.

Having come so close to dethroning Lionel Messi to the Ballon d’Or in 2019, we think Carragher is completely correct in his assessment.
No defender has had a bigger impact on their team than Van Dijk has, and that has been evident with the success he has brought Liverpool.
