Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic has now raved about RB Leipzig defender and Liverpool transfer target Josko Gvardiol.

Speaking on the FIVE YouTube channel with Rio Ferdinand, the Serbian was asked which centre-backs he likes best in the modern game, to which he named the 21-year-old star as his favourite.

“I always loved young defenders. I want to see someone new,” said Vidic.

“Good on the ball, he was aggressive. You can see that he likes to take the ball from defenders – I like that.

“You want to see defenders who take the ball, he likes to defend.

“Gvardiol is someone that I really like.”

According to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, the Reds are keen to sign the young defender in the summer.

Gvardiol would be a phenomenal signing

The need for Liverpool to sign an additional centre-back has grown exponentially this season.

Last year, Joel Matip was absolutely brilliant next to Virgil van Dijk. He was consistently solid, and Jurgen Klopp often looked towards the 31-year-old for a reliable defensive performance.

However, this term, Matip has been off the pace. He has looked nervous on the ball, and he has struggled to deal with some of the Premier League’s more physical strikers.

Furthermore, Joe Gomez has also struggled at times. In one match, he can be absolutely fantastic; then in the next, he can look like a completely different player. He struggles to maintain consistency.

Although Ibrahima Konate has established himself as the Dutchman’s long-term partner, his injury issues have thus made an additional defender a priority.

Therefore, the club couldn’t sign anyone better than Gvardiol, as he is a really ‘special’ player.
