Liverpool are reportedly ready to make an offer to sign Torino defender Perr Schuurs, who has long been tipped as a successor for Virgil van Dijk at Anfield.
According to CalcioMercato, the Merseyside giants are preparing a bid for the 23-year-old Dutch centre-back, with Schuurs tipped to leave Turin this summer after a fantastic season with the Serie A side.
As per the report, Newcastle United are also interested in Schuurs, with the Magpies’ potential UEFA Champions League qualification a factor that could swing the transfer battle in Eddie Howe’s favour, though Liverpool’s sheer stature could be too good for the defender to reject.
Moreover, according to TuttoMercatoWeb, Liverpool have chased Schuurs for quite some time, so much so that the centre-back has been internally tipped to one day replace Van Dijk at the club, with the Ajax academy graduate an ideal successor for his Netherlands teammate.
Indeed, the battle to sign Schuurs will be an interesting one this summer, and with Liverpool ready to spend big on a centre-back, the Dutch international could be an ideal addition for Jurgen Klopp’s side as a backup and eventual replacement for Van Dijk.
Liverpool have to beat Newcastle for Schuurs’ signature this summer
Central defence might not be first on what Liverpool fans want to see money being spent on this summer, but a talent like Schuurs could be too good to pass up on, and the Reds have to ensure that they beat Newcastle and other interested parties to the Torino star.
At 23, Schuurs has plenty of time to develop into a top Premier League defender, and alongside Ibrahima Konate and learning under Van Dijk could see the centre-back flourish into a true successor for the Liverpool no. 4, who could now be beyond his peak.
