Borussia Dortmund have reportedly joined the race to sign Conor Gallagher, with Liverpool also in contention for the Chelsea midfielder this summer.
According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Jurgen Klopp’s former side have added the England international to their shortlist, with the 23-year-old expected to leave west London at a cost of around €50m (£45m).
With Jude Bellingham expected to depart Dortmund this summer, Gallagher could be viewed by the Bundesliga giants as a replacement for the teenage midfield, a move that could be an infuriating one for Liverpool.
The Daily Mail recently reported that Gallagher is a target for the Reds, with Klopp eager to overhaul his midfield. Yet the German manager could now miss out on another option should Dortmund get off the mark fast enough for the Chelsea star.
Praised as ‘fantastic’ by former Liverpool manager Graham Potter, Gallagher has all the qualities to become one of the best midfielders in Europe, and Dortmund could view themselves as the club to unlock the 23-year-old’s true potential.
Indeed, the Chelsea star could be a perfect replacement for Bellingham this summer, and for Liverpool, they might struggle to compete with the German side for the England international if an approach is made by Dortmund for Gallagher.
Dortmund could easily beat Liverpool to Gallagher this summer
With UEFA Champions League qualification on the horizon and a project that could take off this summer with the sale of Bellingham, there’s quite a lot to be excited about with Dortmund, and Gallagher can be forgiven for choosing the German side over Liverpool.
The Reds are expected to miss out on top-four as Klopp plans for his biggest transfer overhaul yet as the Anfield manager, and whilst the Premier League might appeal to Gallagher, Champions League football and guaranteed minutes at Dortmund could be too good to turn down.
