Liverpool transfers: Fabrizio Romano says £20m target is happy at his club

Reported Liverpool target Matt O’Riley has no plans to leave Celtic during the summer transfer window.

That’s according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. Writing on Twitter this morning, Romano reported that O’Riley is currently happy at Celtic, despite interest in him from a number of sides.

“Matt O’Riley, understood to be happy at Celtic even after a few Premier League and Bundesliga clubs have shown serious interest in him,” said Romano.

O’Riley no longer an option for Liverpool

Admittedly, it’s been a little while since Liverpool were linked with a surprise move for O’Riley. But back towards the end of the summer transfer window, it seemed plausible that the Denmark U21 international was an option for the Reds.

Reportedly available for just £20m [ESPN], he appeared to be the kind of ‘under the radar’ signing that the Reds have found success with. Having subsequently had a good season with Celtic, that feeling has only intensified.

Clearly though, Liverpool need more of a sure thing at this moment in time. With a big rebuild on the cards, Jurgen Klopp can’t afford to bet on potential.

A good season in Scotland doesn’t often translate into doing it for a big club in the Premier League. O’Riley could of course be an exception to that, but Liverpool can’t afford to wait around to find out.

Should the 22-year-old continue his progression though, he could be one to watch for future windows. Hopefully once Liverpool are back on their feet next season they’ll be looking for more minor additions next summer.

For now, it appears that O’Riley is going nowhere. With three goals and 11 assists in the Scottish Premiership this season though, you’d think he’d be on the move from Glasgow sooner or later.
