Newcastle United could reportedly soon make a bid to sign Torino defender Perr Schuurs, a player Liverpool are rumoured to have shortlisted as a replacement for Virgil van Dijk.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the Toon are interested in signing the 23-year-old Dutch centre-back as a partner for Sven Botman, with Newcastle prepared to soon make a bid for Schuurs following on from a fantastic year in Italy with Schuurs.
The news could come as a blow for Liverpool, who according to TuttoMercatoWeb have earmarked Schuurs as a potential replacement for Van Dijk, with the Reds expected to make a move for a centre-back in the upcoming summer transfer window.
As one of the best defenders in Italy, it’s no wonder why Liverpool have predicted such a high role for Schuurs should Jurgen Klopp land the Dutchman in the summer, though interest from Newcastle could throw a spanner in the works for the Merseyside giants.
Indeed, the Magpies are in the driving seat for a UEFA Champions League spot and are set to spend big via their PIF owners, and for Liverpool, Newcastle’s interest in Schuurs could quickly unravel into a race to sign the Dutch defender.
Newcastle signing Schuurs could be a massive blow for Liverpool
Schuurs has been fantastic for Torino this season, and with Newcastle keen to sign a long-term partner for Botman, the 23-year-old is an ideal candidate for Eddie Howe to add to his squad, and a move could be devastating for Liverpool this summer.
The Reds are ready to make a move of their own for a defender that they think is worth their limited funds in the window, and with Schuurs viewed as a replacement for Van Dijk, Liverpool will be kicking themselves if they miss out on the Torino man to Newcastle.
