Dirk Kuyt has lauded Liverpool’s decision to sign Cody Gakpo in the January transfer window, with the Dutch international proving to be quite the hit at Anfield in recent weeks.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the Merseyside cult hero revealed that he was a big fan of Liverpool’s decision to sign the 23-year-old winger at the start of the year, with Kuyt impressed with what he’s seen from Gakpo in the Eredivisie and for the Dutch national team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Signed for £35m from PSV, Gakpo has been one of Liverpool’s most impressive players in 2023, with the forward adapting to life in the Premier League at a rapid pace and beginning to make a name for himself amongst the Merseyside fanbase.

Whilst Gakpo’s spot as a guaranteed starter is not yet solidified, the Dutch winger is well on his way to becoming a part of a new-look Liverpool front line alongside the likes of Darwin Nunez. And for Kuyt, the 42-year-old is a big fan of the Reds’ January swoop for the Dutch international.
Kuyt said on Liverpool’s move for Gakpo: “It was great he signed for Liverpool. I watched him a lot in the Eredivisie and everyone could see he was a top-quality player. He had a great World Cup, scoring a few goals, and he deserved his transfer to Liverpool. This move made me very happy.”
Kuyt speaks for most Liverpool fans over happiness with Gakpo signing

Liverpool’s swoop for Gakpo was one of the smoothest and most dramatic of the January window, with the Reds beating Manchester United to the punch seemingly out of nowhere and signing the former PSV star at an incredible price at just £35m.
And for Kuyt, the former Liverpool star speaks for most supporters over his joy of the Reds signing Gakpo, who has all the makings to become the next superstar at Anfield and part of a new attacking trio that could be the natural successors to Jurgen Klopp’s last great forward three.
