Liverpool’s recruitment team warned the club about their ageing squad almost two years ago, according to Sky Sports.

As per the report, the Reds’s recruitment team had raised concerns that the squad was straying away from the ‘right football age’.

It was suggested the starting XI needed to add depth in quality in order to slowly transition to Jurgen Klopp’s next great side.

However, the club ignored such calls – and the effects are now evident.

Furthermore, they also pointed out issues with the blanket contract extensions that the club were handing out to ageing players during the summer of 2021.

With these new deals at Anfield, the Merseyside hierarchy didn’t see the need to refresh the squad with younger talent.

Lack of investment into Liverpool’s squad is the ultimate reason why the team are struggling so much this season.

In the middle of the park, the Reds look like a shadow of their former selves. The likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are nowhere near as effective as they once were, and others such as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are set to depart at the end of the season.

Although he is by far Klopp’s most important player in midfield, Thiago Alcantara is now 32 years old, meaning the club need to plan for life after the Spaniard.

Instead of spending periodically as all big clubs do, Liverpool now need a complete rebuild of its midfield if they are to get back to where they need to be.

Furthermore, similar issues are starting to show in defence, so more additions will be needed there as well.

All in all, this has been terrible planning by the club.
