Pundit Gabby Agbonlahor has shared who he thinks will finish in the top four next season out of Liverpool and Newcastle United.
Speaking on talkSPORT (12 April, 9.50am), the former Aston Villa captain believes the Reds are in danger of missing out on Champions League football again next year.
“If Newcastle go out and do the right business – go and get Maddison, for instance – I think Newcastle will finish above Liverpool next season as well,” said Agbonlahor.
“Liverpool are in danger of missing out on the top four next season as well.”
Whilst Maddison has been linked with a move to Anfield in the past, The Telegraph suggests the midfielder will be the Toon’s number one target this summer.
Agbonlahor thinks Liverpool could miss out again
With Liverpool’s current squad, we would agree with Agbonlahor’s assessment.
However, if the club can pull off the proposed rebuild this summer, we certainly think the Reds will have a strong chance of making the top four next season.
Jurgen Klopp hopes to complete an overhaul of his midfield, as well as bring in another defender.
The vast majority of issues which have arisen this season have come in the middle of the park, so it’s easy to see why the manager wants to start afresh with new players.
Additionally, a lack of quality back-up options in defence have made it hard to keep the starting XI on top form, so an extra signing there could make the world of difference.
Although Newcastle will undoubtedly be strong next year, so will Liverpool. Therefore, we think the Reds might just pip it.
