Liverpool back-up goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was applauded for some brilliant saves during training yesterday.
Kelleher hasnât had too much chance to show his skills this season, making just four appearances in all competitions. But as per the âInside Trainingâ video on liverpoolfc.com, heâs still as sharp as ever.
With the cameras focusing on Liverpoolâs goalkeeper drills yesterday, the Irishman was caught making three quite exceptional saves from quick-fire shots.
Each save brought howls of appreciation from the watching Reds coaches, but the final one was the best of the lot. Getting down low to tip an angled shot past his right post, Kelleher showed he wasnât for beating. âWhat a save!â yelled one of the coaches, as fellow âkeeper Harvey Davies stood applauding.
A little reminder of just what the 24-year-old is capable of. It would be a shame to see him depart this summer.
Liverpool hold Kelleher hope
As things stand, youâd expect that Kelleher will leave Liverpool this summer. Heâs clearly far too good to be sitting on the bench every week.
Unless of an unforeseen injury to Alisson Becker, the Ireland internationalâs game-time will still be severely limited next season. Itâs probably time for him to move on.
However, one little glimmer that may potentially keep Kelleher around is the prospect of European football next term. With Champions League now looking virtually impossible, Liverpool will hope to play in either the Europa League or Europa Conference League.
Should the Reds qualify for either, itâs possible that Jurgen Klopp would choose to field his back-up âkeeper instead of Alisson Becker.
That isnât a given, of course. Liverpool would stand a better chance of winning the competition with Alisson between the sticks. But weâve seen it in the past where top clubs will start a second-choice goalie in one of the more minor European competitions.
If Klopp decides to do the same, then maybe Kelleher would decide to give the Reds one last season. That would save Liverpool the headache of trying to replace him this summer while addressing bigger issues in their first team squad. As this clip handily shows though, theyâll do well to find a back-up to match his quality.
