Ajax have announced the appointment of Sven Mislintat as their new Director of Football, putting an end to two different Liverpool rumours.
Since Marc Overmars departed the club in February 2022, the Dutch giants have been looking for a permanent successor – and they have now hired the former Borussia Dortmund scout to take up the role.
Mislintat has signed a contract with the Eredivisie outfit until the summer of 2026.
Mislintat to Liverpool rumours
Back in November last year, Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg reported that Liverpool were considering Mislintat as a candidate to replace Julian Ward, after it was announced he would be leaving the Reds at the end of the season.
“[Mislintat] is a candidate in order to replace Ward as a Sporting Director at Liverpool in summer 2023!” Plettenberg wrote on Twitter.
“No concrete negotiations yet but he‘s open for Liverpool.
“Relation to [Jurgen] Klopp still brilliant. They have worked together in Dortmund (08-15).”
Having now joined Ajax, the German obviously won’t be making the move to Anfield in the summer.
Ward to Ajax rumours
Also back in November, it was announced that Ward would be leaving his position as Liverpool’s sporting director at the end of the season.
According to The Times, the former Tottenham official’s decision was unexpected, as he had claimed he wanted to take a break away from football.
However, just last month, The Mirror reported that Ward had agreed a deal with Ajax to become their new Sporting Director in the summer.
With Mislintat’s appointment in Amsterdam, it appears the Liverpool executive may be taking a break from football after all.
