Former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld has claimed the staff at Anfield have been very impressed by new signing Cody Gakpo.

Speaking with Viaplay (as relayed by Dutch outlet PSV Fans), the former Reds shot-stopper was full of praise for the 23-year-old, suggesting everyone at the club has been happy with his arrival.

“It’s [the false nine] a new position for him, at PSV he played on the left,” said Westerveld.

“I only hear positive reports about him left and right from the club. He does what is asked of him and he does it well.

“Like a false nine, he gets into the ball, he turns with his technique, he can get away at speed himself or give a cross ball.

“Sure, they want him to score more, but like against Manchester United a few weeks ago, it went fantastically.”

Westerveld says Liverpool have been impressed by Gakpo

Since arriving at the club in January in a deal worth £37m, Gakpo has had to endure one of the most difficult periods in Liverpool’s recent history.

Coming straight into the XI due to various injuries in Klopp’s attack, the Dutchman has had to adjust to his role as the starting false-nine.

Roberto Firmino made that position his own over the past eight years, but with his injury and the fact he’s leaving at the end of the season, the Reds decided to train the youngster down the middle.

In 12 Premier League appearances, the Netherlands international has managed to score four goals.

As he continues to get used to his new position, more goals will obviously follow. But so far, Gakpo has been able to demonstrate signs of great talent and promise.

He will certainly play a huge role in Klopp’s team for years to come.
