Jamie Carragher has taken to Twitter to claim that Virgil van Dijk is a better Premier League defender than former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic.
The Sky Sports pundit took to social media to defender the 31-year-old Liverpool star amid recent criticism directed at Van Dijk, with some football fans believing that this season has proved that the Dutchman is nowhere near amongst the Premier League’s best-ever defenders.
As a result, Carragher has now thrown his hat in the ring to claim that Van Dijk is better than Vidic, a centre-back many consider to be the best to ever play in England having led Sir Alex Ferguson to five Premier League titles as well as a UEFA Champions League.
Whilst the topic of ‘who is the best’ is one of the most subjective in football, a strong case can be made that Van Dijk, despite his recent success with Liverpool amid his poor form this campaign, is not close enough to being up for the best defender in Premier League history when compared to the likes of Vidic.
Indeed, there’s no denying that the Dutchman has been one of the best defenders in world football since signing for Liverpool in 2018. However, titles and team success are as big a yard stick to greatness than individual quality, and Vidic, alongside Vincent Kompany, John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, all blow Van Dijk out of the water.
Carragher can regret Van Dijk comment if Liverpool miss out on Europe

Having just come off the back of an incredible 2-2 draw against Arsenal, emotions are running high around Anfield having taken the Premier League leaders the distance. Yet for Carragher, the pundit could soon regret ranking Van Dijk as a better defender than Vidic.
With Liverpool still not out of the woods yet in the race to win a European spot, the former Reds’ star could be kicking himself if Jurgen Klopp’s side miss out on a top-seven finish with Van Dijk fully-fit in the side, with the defender himself seemingly getting away with criticism for Gabriel Martinelli’s opener against Arsenal.
