Reporter Geoff Shreeves has shared what happened down the Liverpool tunnel after Andy Robertson was struck by one of the linesman at half-time against Arsenal.
Speaking on Sky Sports during the break, the commentator spoke of the incident which took place just after the half-time whistle was blown.
“When they came into the tunnel at half-time, I can tell you Andy Robertson was absolutely apoplectic, stunned even,” said Shreeves.
“He said, ‘the linesman has just elbowed me in the throat’ – Jordan Henderson was well aware of it and led the remonstrations with referee Paul Tierney and after that they got taken away. Extraordinary scenes.”
Gary Neville also weighed in on the clash, suggesting the assistant referee will face punishment.
“I’ve never seen an official raise an elbow to a player,” he said.
“I think he’ll be in a lot of trouble after this game ends.”
Shreeves reacts to Robertson’s incident
After the break, Sky Sports showed footage of the incident, where the linesman was seen lashing out with an elbow at Robertson’s throat.
The Scotsman certainly wasn’t overreacting – in fact, he seemed to do extremely well considering the circumstances.
If the roles were reversed and it was the left-back who had hit the assistant referee, we would be seeing an automatic red card and an extensive ban.
However, nothing seemed to come of the event during the match.
Liverpool are sure to contest it over the coming days, however, as that sort of behaviour simply isn’t on – especially from an official.
