Chelsea will resume contract talks with Mason Mount at the end of the season amid growing reports that Liverpool are interested in signing the England international.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Blues will sit down with the 24-year-old in the summer to once again being negotiations over a new deal, with Chelsea so far being unsuccessful in their efforts to sign Mount to a new contract, much to Liverpool’s joy.
The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for Mount in recent weeks as Jurgen Klopp looks to target a move for the midfielder this summer, a player who Declan Rice has lauded as ‘special’ despite his misfortunes with Chelsea this season.
Indeed, Mount’s future will become a major talking point in the coming weeks amid Frank Lampard’s return to the club as interim manager. And for Romano, Chelsea plan to sit down with the midfielder this summer to discuss new terms for a fresh contract.
Romano said: “What I can tell you is that negotiations will resume at the end of the season, this is the idea. So, May, June. But from what I understand, the new coach could change the situation, this is possible. Let’s see who’s going to be the new long-term coach, but it’s not about Frank Lampard.
“He’s focused on the present, he’s not creating any issues with contracts or these kinds of things. But for Mount the new coach is going to be important, let’s see how the conversation will go at the end of the season. At the moment it’s still on standby between Mason Mount and Chelsea, with Liverpool really interested in the English midfielder.”
Liverpool could miss out on Mount if Lampard unlocks his true quality
Nobody expects Lampard’s second tenure at Chelsea to go well, with the English manager already suffering a loss back in the hot seat with the Blues to the hands of Wolves. Yet if there’s one player who will benefit from this appointment, it’s Mount.
Lampard was the man to bring the Cobham academy graduate to light during their time together at Derby County, and with Mount becoming influential under the former England international back at Chelsea, there’s every chance that the playmaker’s true quality will come to the forefront between now and the end of the season.
