Former Liverpool academy star Tom Clayton has labelled Curtis Jones as the best player he has ever played with on a technical level.

Speaking to the Athletic, the 22-year-old Swindon Town defender lauded his former Kirkby teammate’s technical and passing ability, with Jones regarded during his younger days as one of the best on-the-ball talents coming from England as a teenager.

Now an established member of Liverpool’s first-team, Jones is keen to become a regular under Jurgen Klopp having endured an injury-hit season as well as a year where the midfielder, as well as other players in the senior set-up, have suffered a confidence hit.

Whilst Jones impressed in Liverpool’s most recent Premier League fixture against Chelsea, the midfielder is still viewed by many supporters as nothing but a squad player with potential, though the 22-year-old certainly has his fans, mainly in former academy teammate Clayton.

The Scotland youth international said: “Curtis is the best player, technically, I have played with. What he could do with a football, I don’t think I have seen anyone like it. He got up to the first team so quickly and will be around the first team for years to come.”

Jones showed against Chelsea that he can become the midfielder in Klopp’s set-up that is the definitive link between the defence and the attack, with the youngster a good progressor of the ball and capable of finding pockets of space to make dangerous passes.

And whilst Clayton’s praise might seem high for some supporters, the centre-back is right to remind some fans of just how good Jones can be on his day, with the midfielder having the potential to become a superstar for Liverpool in the years to come.
