Former Liverpool player and Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is being eyed for Chelsea’s vacant managerial job.
That’s according to The Guardian, who have shared a report on the West London outfit’s search for Graham Potter’s successor.
While it is suggested that it is Julian Nagelsmann’s job to lose, the Blues are touted with interest in Luis Enrique, Mauricio Pochettino, Oliver Glasner and Rúben Amorim.
However, it’s believed Chelsea greatly admire what Xabi Alonso is currently doing at Bayer Leverkusen.
Although they have been very impressed by the 41-year-old, it’s unlikely the former Anfield favourite could be appointed at such an early stage in his career – given he has been in management for less than a year.
Liverpool legend Alonso linked with Chelsea job
Having arrived at Leverkusen when they were relegation contenders sitting second-bottom of the Bundesliga table, Alonso’s transformation of the club has been absolutely remarkable.
Bayer now sit seventh in the league, with the chance of qualifying for Europe next season.
Having spent less than a year in management, this is an incredible accomplishment for the Spaniard.
Due to his success in Germany, GOAL previously suggested Liverpool will be keeping a close eye on their former player, as they prepare for life beyond Jurgen Klopp.
As Steven Gerrard struggled at Aston Villa, the German’s successor at Anfield has been made less than obvious.
However, now it seems like another favourite on Merseyside could be up to the task – that’s if he isn’t poached by Real Madrid first.
