Raheem Sterling reportedly urged Chelsea fans to chant louder at Stamford Bridge last night amid taunts from Liverpool supporters from the sideline.
According to the Daily Mail, the England international was subject to the usual chants and boos that have followed the winger since his departure from Liverpool in 2015, with Sterling urging Chelsea fans to increase the noise as they sang ‘he’s one of our own’.
Even eight years after leaving Anfield, Sterling has become a lightning rod for Liverpool fans whenever the Reds line up against their former boy wonder, who this summer left Manchester City for Chelsea having been deemed surplus to requirements by Pep Guardiola.
In his first year in west London, though, Sterling has somewhat struggled to adapt to his new surroundings, though this is not an unusual tale given the amount of signings Chelsea have made this season under their new owner Todd Boehly.
Indeed, whilst Sterling only got eight minutes of football last night, it’s clear that the winger still has some rivalry with his former club, something Liverpool fans are more than willing to latch onto given how long the feud between the winger and Anfield side has been going on for.
Sterling won’t regret stirring up Chelsea crowd against Liverpool
Football rivalries are one of the reasons we love the sport, and Sterling stirring up the Chelsea crowd will go a long way in the English winger winning his new supporters on his side, even at the price of annoying Liverpool fans in the away stand.
Sterling and Liverpool’s relationship is a testy one, to say the least, and although the winger left Anfield some years ago, the rocky feelings between the two still remains there, with the Chelsea man now more than willing to rally on his new team from the sidelines.
