Jurgen Klopp has said Diogo Jota gave a good account of himself against Manchester City after the Liverpool boss said only four of his players impressed in the 4-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the German manager named the Portuguese international as a player who impressed against City despite Klopp originally saying only four members of his squad showed up, those being Alisson Becker, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Cody Gakpo.
Klopp said on Jota’s performance against City: “The players feel very responsible for everything, so there’s not one player in the dressing room who doesn’t care. I said what I said, maybe I forgot Diogo [Jota] because he played an absolutely okay game as long as his legs were there after the long injury he had.
With Jota still returning from a long-term injury, the versatile attacker is yet to hit his best-attacking form after starring for Liverpool since his £45m move to Anfield from Wolves in 2020, with the 26-year-old yet to even score for the Merseyside giants this campaign.
Yet despite this, it appears that Jota has done more than enough in recent weeks to win over Klopp’s favour, with the Liverpool boss’ latest comments a good indicator of how the German views the Portuguese international, who could feature tonight against Chelsea.
Jota will hope to build from City display in upcoming Liverpool matches
Jota might not be on the scoresheet yet for the season, but with Klopp impressed with what he saw on Saturday and the attacker set to feature against Chelsea this evening and Arsenal on the weekend, it’s only a matter of time before the striker is off the mark for the campaign.
Indeed, Jota is close to reaching his best form, and after inching his way back to full recovery, the Portuguese forward could soon explode into life, a prospect that might be decisive in Liverpool returning to the UEFA Champions League for next season.
