Liverpool are one of the clubs working to sign OGC Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram this summer.
That’s according to French outlet RMC Sport. They claim that the 22-year-old is being courted by some of Europe’s top sides after a breakout season in Ligue 1.
One of these is reportedly Liverpool. Alongside Newcastle, Manchester United and RB Leipzig, the Reds are said to be ‘positioning themselves’ to sign Thuram.
PSG are also claimed to be in the running. However, the French champions are supposedly more interested in strengthening other positions this summer. As a result, it looks like Thuram will end up in Germany or England.
In order for that to happen, it’s claimed that Nice will demand around £35m. From the player’s point of view, Thuram is said to be potentially ‘tempted’ by a new stage of his career.
Thuram making a name for himself
Thuram emerged earlier this year as a possible transfer target for Liverpool. Around the turn of the year it had looked as though a winter move may even happen.
Invariably though, the son of World Cup-winner Lilian stayed put in the South of France. Since then, his profile has been raised a level or two.
Impressive performances for Nice led to a first ever call-up to the senior France national side. Having made his debut against the Netherlands in March, Thuram will surely be a fixture in the squad for years to come.
As a result, Liverpool may now feel that Khephren has just become a little unattainable. The £35m price-tag doesn’t sound bad at all, but with other clubs interested the Reds won’t want to get into a bidding war.
Jurgen Klopp usually likes to get his summer business done very early on. It’s rare to see Liverpool caught up in a long-running transfer saga during the end-of or mid-season windows.
As a result, if the Reds feel there’s too many clubs involved then they may back out. That would be a shame as Thuram looks to have the tools to be a success at Anfield. RMC seem to think Liverpool’s hat is still in the ring though, so let’s hope that it is.
