There’s a growing feeling that Chelsea could sell midfielder Mateo Kovacic this summer, after he’s been linked with a move to Liverpool.
That’s according to the Evening Standard, who claim the west London side are yet to open contract talks with the 28-year-old, despite the fact he has just 16 months left on his current deal.
Although he has been given the armband in the absence of Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva, it is becoming more likely that the Croatia international could be sold as part of a summer clear-out.
The Blues will be targeting another defensive midfielder to partner transfer-record signing Enzo Fernandez, and they also need to raise funds to comply with financial fair play regulations.
According to 90min, the Reds are one of the sides ‘exploring’ a deal to sign Kovacic.
They reportedly see Jorginho’s transfer to Arsenal as proof that Chelsea will do business with them.
Liverpool target Kovacic could leave
With Liverpool in the market for a number of midfielders this summer, a player like Kovacic would be an excellent addition to Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
The 28-year-old has a wealth of experience at the top level, having amassed 134 appearances in the Premier League, 80 in Serie A and 73 in La Liga.
He has even played 63 times in the Champions League, illustrating his pedigree within European football.
Having arrived at Stamford Bridge in a deal worth £40m, Kovacic could be available for a cut-price fee, due to his dwindling contract.
Therefore, with Liverpool’s transfer budget needing to stretch across a couple of players, the Croatian could be a brilliant value-for-money signing.
