Liverpool injury news: Luis Diaz set to return to full training this week

Liverpool are set to welcome Luis Diaz back to full training this week, with the Colombian international on the verge of returning to fitness having missed the last few months of action.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the former FC Porto superstar is pencilled in for first-team training in the coming days, with Diaz being out since October having picked up a knee injury and since going under the knife to have surgery to fix the issue.

Since then, Liverpool have recruited Cody Gakpo to cover for Diaz, yet with the 26-year-old now back in training, Jurgen Klopp could soon have a selection problem on his hands heading into the final matches of the Premier League season.

With 12 games left to play, Diaz could play a crucial role in Liverpool nicking a top-four spot ahead of the likes of Newcastle United and Tottenham, with the winger’s return bringing Klopp an incredible attacking option that the Reds have sorely missed.

Indeed, the South American has been one of Liverpool’s most productive players since signing for the club in January 2022, and with Diaz now coming back to training, Klopp will have plenty of forward options to help kick-start a major push for top-four.

As for whether Diaz will start, it would be a fair assumption to make that Gakpo has the left-sided attacking role down as his, for the time being. However, this could quickly change if the Dutch international begins to lose his goalscoring touch in the coming weeks.

Liverpool’s season has been plagued and influenced by injuries, with Diaz’s one of the biggest blows the Reds have endured all campaign. Yet with the winger now back in training this week, the Anfield side can now start to feel hopeful about their top-four prospects.

With only the Premier League to focus on, keeping everyone fresh and fit will be key for Klopp if he is to pull off his biggest top-four feat yet, and with Diaz now in training, the Colombian could play a huge role in Liverpool beating their English rivals to the illustrious top-four spot.
