Jurgen Klopp completely convinced by £44m player, he’s ready to finally sign him for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has decided that now is the time for Liverpool to finally make a move and sign Torino defender Perr Schuurs.

Schuurs has reportedly been a long-held target for Liverpool. Tuttosport report that Klopp held firm interest in the 23-year-old as long ago as 2020.

And although a move didn’t materialise at that time, they claim that the Reds manager is now ‘even more convinced’ by Schuurs than he was then.

As a result, Liverpool are said to be ‘drafting’ a bid of around £44m for the Dutchman. They have competition though. From England, Manchester United and Tottenham are supposedly ‘ready to enter,’ while PSG are circling too.

Italian clubs are also claimed to be ‘at the window.’ Inter, Milan, Napoli and Roma are all said to hold an interest in Schuurs. However, it will reportedly be difficult for them to match the bids of the English clubs. Finally, the centre-back also supposedly wouldn’t be averse to spending another year at Torino.

Schuurs ready for next step, but Liverpool must wait

As Liverpool reportedly search for a new centre-back this summer, it’s no surprise to see Schuurs mentioned. The former Ajax man been linked with an Anfield arrival for the best part of three years.

Now blossoming into an excellent defender in Italy, he could be ready to make the jump in quality needed.

But right now, it feels unlikely that Liverpool will spend over £40m on a centre-back. They need one, sure, but are they willing to eat into their midfield budget? Probably not, and to be honest, nor should they.

Midfield is the key are for the upcoming window. If Liverpool leave themselves short again, they could be in for another disaster of a season.

With two top centre-backs already at the club – and a couple more good ones – they should be fine for another year. If the midfield is improved as it should be, Virgil van Dijk and co will get better protection in 2023/24 as well.

By the end of next season though, they’ll definitely be due an upgrade. Joel Matip’s contract will be up and they’ll have to start planning for Van Dijk’s successor too. If Schuurs stays at Torino, he should be in the frame then. The stars haven’t quite aligned for this summer, but let’s have another look in 12 months.
