Liverpool could sign reported transfer target Gabri Veiga for less than his £35m release clause this summer.
That’s according to Spanish outlet Cadena Ser. They claim that the Reds are set to do battle with several clubs for the 20-year-old.
As usual with Liverpool targets, it’s claimed that Real Madrid are one of the sides most interested in Veiga. However, the Celta Vigo man’s agents have reportedly encouraged the player to move to the Premier League.
To that end, Arsenal and Newcastle United are said to have joined Liverpool in the race to sign the young midfielder.
Although Veiga has £35m release clause, sources cited by Cadena Ser believe he’ll be sold for an even lower fee this summer.
Liverpool in need of midfield experience
With figures like £110m being bandied around for the likes of Jude Bellingham, this sounds like a potentially good deal for Liverpool.
But it’s worth remembering that Veiga has less than 50 senior appearances to his name. The Reds would very much be paying for potential rather than the end product.
In the midfield predicament that Liverpool find themselves in, they need something more like the finished article. Veiga has been deemed ‘spectacular’ by Spain U21 coach Santi Denia [Marca]. But he doesn’t yet have the experience to be seen as a sure thing.
As a result, if he were perhaps a third midfield signing for Liverpool this summer, it may well be worth the punt. But the Reds need two new players to slot straight into the team next season. With money always a little tight, £30m+ might still be a slight stretch here.
Nevertheless, Veiga can’t be ruled out as an option. There looks set to be a big range of midfielders on the move during the summer window. It wouldn’t be a surprise to hear that this Spanish youngster was on their ‘unusually long’ list.
But unless something unexpected happens, Veiga won’t be towards the top of that list. Let’s see where he ends up.
