Liverpool star Cody Gakpo has admitted he struggles to understand the Scouse accent, and often teammate Curtis Jones in particular.
Speaking on an episode of Off The Pitch, as shared by the club’s social media, the Dutchman revealed that he can’t always understand what Scousers are saying – although he does like the accent!
“How’s it been with the accent? asked Merseyside hero Jamie Webster.
“Difficult. When you speak fast, I cannot understand,” replied Gakpo.

“Often, to Curtis [Jones], [repeating himself] maybe three times because I cannot understand what he’s saying.”
He later added: “Where I’m from, the rest of Holland thinks we have a bad accent, so…”
Webster then claimed he has the same experience with the Scouse accent in England, to which Gakpo replied: “I think it’s good.”
Gakpo can’t always understand Jones
As a foreign player joining the club, the local accent is always going to be a bit confusing upon your arrival – and especially so in Liverpool.
Darwin Nunez spoke of his struggles with English when he arrived at Anfield, so Gakpo certainly has the advantage there.
Instead, the likes of Jones and Trent Alexander-Arnold can sometimes prove to be too difficult to understand, due to their strong Scouse accents.

This is something which will never change, but the Netherlands international will certainly get used to it.
He already seems to be getting the hang of things, as he seems to have formed a friendship with the 22-year-old Scouser.
