Liverpool transfer news: Newcastle do like Diogo Jota, but they may not be able to afford him

Journalist Jacque Talbot has shared an insight on Newcastle United’s interest in Liverpool attacker Diogo Jota.

Speaking on the LFC Transfer Room podcast, the reporter suggested the Portugal international could prove to be too expensive for the Toon.

“Someone near Newcastle has said ‘yeah, he’s on there’ [their transfer list]. He’s liked by the club,” said Talbot, speaking about the Magpies’ interest in Jota.

“He’s probably a bit out of reach financially. You can see why, he ticks a lot of boxes, his versatility – he can play on the wing, centre forward, he’s Premier League proven and stuff.

“I went to the guy at Liverpool and he was like it’ll be about £70 million for that to happen.

“So, we put it out there and that’s not going to happen. I can’t see it.

“But I find it interesting! I think fans will find it interesting, like ‘oh wow we like Jota’. It gives you an indication of how much money they are willing to spend in one position, but it got a bit out of hand.”

Jota too expensive for Newcastle?

As clubs go, you probably couldn’t find one as wealthy as Newcastle.

Since Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund took over at St James’ Park, huge names have been linked with moves to Tyneside.

However, despite their riches, the Magpies have to abide by FFP rules.

As a result, if they want to sign many other players this summer, they won’t be able to go out and splash £70m on Jota.

Regardless, it’s highly unlikely Jurgen Klopp would let his attacker go – especially with Roberto Firmino’s upcoming departure.

As a 26-year-old, Jota will be viewed as a player who will have a key role within Liverpool’s set-up for years to come, so there’s little chance he leaves to join a top-four rival.
