Liverpool have put together an unusually long shortlist as they search for midfield additions this summer.

That’s according to the Liverpool Echo, who claim that Jurgen Klopp is still very much keeping his options open. Unsurprisingly, midfield is said to be the priority when it comes to summer transfers this year. To that end, it’s claimed that have an identified an ‘unspecified’ number of players.

One name definitely on the list is Jude Bellingham. The Borussia Dortmund man is re-iterated as being the ‘primary target’ for Liverpool. Beyond Bellingham, there is also said to be ‘genuine interest’ in Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes.

For now, those are the only two solid names put forward. What they do say though, is that to have such a massive shortlist is highly ‘unusual’ for Liverpool.

With not so long left in the season, it’s claimed that the Reds would normally have whittled their options down by this stage. That reportedly isn’t the case this time around, though. As a result, the Echo warn Liverpool fans to expect plenty of links to a big number of midfielders.

Reds forced to alter their approach

This might be exciting for supporters, and it’s encouraging that Liverpool are assessing plenty of options. But it is also a little bit of a worry.

Where the Reds have found success in the market is by identifying a key target and going out and getting them. They usually have a very specific criteria for those who they’re keen to bring in, and this helps make sure the right players are signed.

Going for a more scattergun approach may not be be the best idea when we really need to get this transfer window bang on.

On the other hand, we do know who they’ve identified as their No.1 target. With other clubs in for, and confident of getting Jude Bellingham though, they obviously do need to sound out other options.

It would be interesting to know who Liverpool’s Bellingham alternative really is. Nunes and Mason Mount are the two names who are regularly mentioned by credible sources. But neither could really fill the Jude-shaped hole should Liverpool lose out on the Dortmund man.

Whatever ends up happening, the Reds are bound to get a new starter in. As things stand, it looks set to be at least two and potentially three. That’s exciting. But for that to happen, Liverpool may need to sift through some duds first. As the season ticks down, expect the names on this shortlist to become clearer as the Reds take aim at their targets.
