Jamie Carragher has been extremely impressed by Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella, following claims Liverpool want to bring him to Anfield.
Speaking on CBS Sports last night whilst covering the Italian team’s Champions League clash against Porto, the Reds legend was full of praise for the 26-year-old.
“When you think about how teams set up now, you see Inter play with a back three with five in midfield, or a 4-3-3, and I think he’s probably one of the best in Europe playing in that tucked in, right sided central midfield position. He’s box to box, he gets goals from there. We saw how outstanding he was for his national team in winning the European Championships,” said Carragher.
“He’s that player who can open things up, he gets in there, but that inside right position now is so important in football and can you make runs from that position? He makes runs ahead of the striker. And he’s a huge goal threat.
“Any top team needs to have goals from midfield. It’ll be really interesting if he actually stays at Inter but you think one day would he go the Premier League or one of the Spanish giants because I certainly think he has the ability to do so.”
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool scout Paul Goldrick and chief scout Barry Hunter have been following Barella for some time now, and they are thus eyeing a move for him in the summer.
Carragher full of praise for Barella
Liverpool really do need to fill the void left by Georginio Wijnaldum in that right-sided midfield role, as they have failed to do so since he left the club in 2021.
The Dutchman often went unnoticed for what he did in the middle of the park, but his job was absolutely crucial to the Reds’ success.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have been linked with a myriad of players in recent months, as they look to complete an overhaul of their midfield this summer.
The likes of Jude Bellingham and Mason Mount have regularly been touted with moves, but one player who has also been linked is Barella.
Klopp is said to be a big fan of the Italian, so it’s no surprise to hear of Liverpool’s interest in the 26-year-old.
He has been dominant in the Serie A for years now, so maybe a Premier League switch would be the next step in his illustrious career.
