Newcastle United are eyeing a shock move for Liverpool attacker Diogo Jota, according to FootballTransfers.
Despite the 26-year-old signing a long-term contract extension before the start of the season, the Magpies are looking to land the Portugal international at St James’ Park.
The Reds value Jota at around £60m, but it is said they would be reluctant to lose him to a top-four rival.
Although the move seems improbable, the report brings up an interesting point, as the player will now have to compete for game-time with the likes of Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz.
His departure would see a big increase in the funds Jurgen Klopp would have at his disposal in the summer, suggesting this is a transfer which actually could take place.
Newcastle want Liverpool ace Diogo Jota
Since arriving at Anfield in 2020, Jota has played a significant part in Liverpool’s success.
Last season, the forward made 55 appearances for the Reds. During this time, he bagged 21 goals and eight assists – ultimately helping the side win both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.
At a point in time when the club were suffering from various injuries, Jota was the main man in Klopp’s front-line. He was the reliable goal-scorer in the side, often cropping up with either a headed or a poacher’s goal.
However, the former Wolves star has not enjoyed the same success this season. He has made 14 appearances thus far, and he is yet to score.
With such competition for places following the arrival of Gakpo and Nunez, Liverpool could look to sell Jota if they are offered the right price.
This would allow them to put the money elsewhere, with an overhaul of the midfield very much needed.
However, it would also weaken the squad’s quality in depth, which has been improved in recent seasons.
