Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has urged Jurgen Klopp to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
Taking to Twitter, the Spaniard shared news from MailOnline, which claimed the Catalan club need to raise £178m in player sales to avoid a transfer ban.
The financial issues facing the La Liga giants have been widely documented for a long time now, and this led to Manchester United trying to sign the Netherlands international last summer.
According to ESPN, Liverpool joined the Red Devils and Chelsea in the race to land the 25-year-old in January. However, a move failed to come to fruition, as Barcelona ruled out the player’s departure.
The Guardian now claim United will make another move to sign De Jong at the end of the season, and Enrique has urged the Merseyside outfit to do the same.
Enrique urges Liverpool to sign De Jong
Liverpool are in need of a major overhaul in the middle of the park this summer.
The club have set their sights on Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham, and it is expected that it will take £130m to bring him to Anfield.
However, just one midfield addition won’t cut it for Klopp, as the team’s issues are deep-rooted.
Therefore, a player like De Jong would be another brilliant signing for the Reds.
Having joined Barcelona in 2019 in a deal worth £65m, the Dutchman – who has been hailed as an ‘extraordinary’ player by Xavi – has emerged as one of the best talents in European football.
Known for his incredible press resistance and effortless creative play, the midfielder would suit Klopp’s playstyle perfectly.
As he reportedly earns £232,000-a-week, Barcelona could look to offload him in the summer, as they attempt to raise funds.
Therefore, as Enrique says, this could be a great opportunity for Liverpool to sign an excellent midfield player.
