Amanda Staveley responds when asked if she could sell Newcastle with Liverpool on the market

Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley has responded to questions whether Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund could sell the Tyneside club to buy Liverpool.

Speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit, the Toon director was asked why they decided to buy the Magpies over other Premier League clubs.

“We didn’t go for the wonderful Tottenham, Chelsea or Liverpool… why spend billions?” said Staveley.

When questioned whether Saudi Arabia would sell Newcastle to buy another club, with Liverpool and Manchester United on the market, she replied: “I don’t think so.”

According to the Evening Standard, Staveley has previously been linked with a takeover at Anfield, albeit before arriving in the north-east.

Staveley responds to Liverpool questions

With the success Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund are already having at Newcastle, a late switch to Liverpool was never a realistic possibility.

Instead, Eddie Howe’s side have emerged as top-four contenders, and they even made the final of the Carabao Cup last month.

After last night’s win over Wolves, the Reds have pushed up to sixth in the Premier League table.

They are now just two points behind the Toon, although they have played once more than their competitors.

If Liverpool are to get back to challenging for the league title, they could seriously do with the level of investment Newcastle have had injected into their squad recently.

A summer rebuild has never been more important for Jurgen Klopp, but that starts with owners who are willing to spend.

This hasn’t been the case with FSG, so hopefully the incoming minority investors will be more generous upon their arrival.
