It’s ‘highly possible’ that Chelsea are planning for the sale of reported Liverpool target Mason Mount this summer.
Mount has emerged as an unlikely option for Liverpool as they prepare to overhaul their midfield this summer. Once seen as indispensable to Chelsea, the England international’s contract situation has put now put his future in severe doubt.
And speaking via Football Daily today, journalist David Ornstein claimed that the Blues really could sell Mount, as well as fellow academy graduates Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Conor Gallagher.
“If Chelsea sell any of those players [Mount, Loftus-Cheek, Gallagher], which is highly possible now, they would bank complete profit in terms of their accounts. That’s very attractive as a prospect,” Ornstein explained. “There may not be a great deal of room for sentiment in these decisions now. I think Chelsea are going to operate in what they’re seeing, the evidence, the numbers, the data. If players aren’t performing to the levels they want, or aren’t part of their vision and good offers come in for them, then I think they might be quite clinical about it.
“We know that the Mason Mount contract talks have essentially been parked until the summer at which point Chelsea are going to sell him or renew his contract. He’s turned down a couple of offers so far. That’s a really interesting situation.”
Liverpool leading the way for Mount
Ornstein doesn’t mention Liverpool here specifically. But as of the most recent reports, the Reds are leading the way for Mount. It’s also been claimed that a move to Anfield would indeed be Mount’s own personal preference, too [Football Transfers].
So, should he fail to agree a deal at Chelsea, we could well end up seeing him in a Liverpool shirt.
As strange as that might seem, it does actually make a lot of sense. As well as midfielders, Liverpool also need homegrown options. Potentially available at a decent price and plugging a hole in the squad, it could be a smart signing.
At twenty-four, Mount still has his best years ahead of him. Throughout his time at Chelsea he’s had to make do with chopping and changing managers. It’s clear that he played his best football with Thomas Tuchel settled at the helm.
If he moves to Anfield, the former Derby loanee won’t have to worry about such upheaval. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him blossom once more under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp and his coaching team.
As Ornstein says, this is a really interesting situation. Of course, it could still be that Chelsea resolve it and Mount signs a new deal. But right now, it’s all to play for.
