Liverpool transfer news: The Reds are ready to sell Thiago this summer, they want Nicolo Barella as his replacement

Liverpool could part ways with midfielder Thiago Alcantara in the summer, with Inter Milan star Nicolo Barella touted as a replacement.

That’s according to CalcioMercato, who claim the Reds may look to begin their rebuild by letting go of the 31-year-old.

As a result, they suggest Barella – who the Merseyside outfit have scouted extensively – could be lined up to come in the other way.

Whether that involves a swap deal at all awaits to be seen, but the report adds that the Spaniard could appeal to Inter.

Thiago – who will turn 32 in April – is out of contract next summer.

Barella to replace Thiago at Liverpool?

With Barella rumoured to cost in excess of £70m, Liverpool might not have the funds needed if they are to sign Jude Bellingham as well.

Therefore, a deal involving Thiago going in the opposite direction could be a more realistic prospect.

However, after what we’ve seen at Anfield this season, it should not be the Spaniard who Klopp lets go of.

Asides from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner – who are all out of contract this summer, the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson have been well below par this season.

In fact, besides Stefan Bajcetic’s emergence into the first-team, Thiago has been Liverpool’s best midfielder – and by some margin too.

As he is approaching 32, it would be fair if they decided to slightly reduce his playing time, due to the various injuries he often picks up.

However, the likes of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos have shown that age is just a number when you have the talent to compete – as Thiago does.
