Liverpool have been sending scouts to watch Mainz 05 midfielder Anton Stach since the turn of the year.
That’s according to 90min, who claim that the Reds have been watching Stach over recent weeks. They’re not the only Premier League side to be keeping tabs on the German though.
Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are all said to be on the trail of the 24-year-old as well.
Stach, who has two caps for Germany, could reportedly be a potential successor to another Liverpool target – Declan Rice
A new name in Liverpool’s midfield search
As Liverpool search for a quick-fix to their porous midfield, all sorts of players have been suggested as being targets.
From superstars like Jude Bellingham to blasts from the past such as Piotr Zielinski, plenty have been offered up.
In amongst all of that, Stach will be one of the less familiar options to many fans. Before his move to Mainz in 2021, the 6ft 4in midfielder had spent much of his career to that point in the German second division.
A regular at Jurgen Klopp’s former club since his arrival, his form saw international recognition in March 2022.
Justifying his selection, German national team coach Hanis Flick called Stach a ‘high quality’ player via bundesliga.com.
The midfielder ended up making his debut against Israel, since adding one more cap to his collection.
Perhaps hopeful of a place in last winter’s World Cup squad, Stach eventually missed out on featuring in Qatar. As it turned out, this could have been a blessing in disguise, with the Germans crashing out in the group stage.
For Liverpool, he could provide a bit of the steel they’ve been missing in their midfield this season. Big, rangy and athletic, the Reds could certainly use a player like Stach. Let’s see if this one goes any further.
