The Reds’ newest signing Cody Gakpo has named the two Liverpool players he already loves playing alongside in attack.
Speaking in an interview with UEFA.com, the 23-year-old shared his experience of settling in at Anfield and how he’s adjusting to playing with his new teammates.
“Playing with guys like [Mohamed] Salah and [Darwin] Núñez is fantastic, of course,” said Gakpo.
“It’s great to try and score goals together. I think we’re starting to get used to each other more and more every day. So, I think we’re going to be alright.
“I think we’re getting more and more in sync. That’s just something that takes time.
“As I said, normally, it all happens during pre-season, when you have time to get to know each other, but in this case, we didn’t have that time, so things went a bit differently to usual.”
Gakpo raves about Salah and Nunez
When the Dutchman first arrived on Merseyside in January, he was thrown into the starting XI, due to various injuries to the likes of Roberto Firmino, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.
Therefore, when criticism came of the front-three, it was most unfair. Gakpo was being played in a position he was relatively unfamiliar with, whilst also adjusting to the rigours of a new club and playing in the Premier League.
Thus, although they didn’t immediately hit the ground running with one another, this was always going to be the case.
However, in recent weeks, we have seen better link-up play between the attack.
Gakpo, Salah and Nunez seem like they’re on the same wavelength now, as they’re beginning to combine to create opportunities on goal.
This will only improve going forward, as it takes time to form these relationships.
Therefore, with Jota and Firmino having returned from injury, Jurgen Klopp will have a good number of options to pick from.
