Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga has admitted that he can’t wait to play at Anfield in the Champions League tonight.

Madrid travel to Merseyside as they take on Liverpool in the competition’s last-16 this evening. And looking ahead to the game, Camavinga told The Guardian that playing at Anfield is something he’s really looking forward to.

“Anfield is a special ground, mythical, and it’s good to be able to play there at least once in your life,” said the 20-year-old. However, as usual with Madrid, praise was followed by an unnecessary addition.

“But there’s nothing like ours,” the France international tagged onto the end. Into these, Liverpool.

Madrid prepare to face the Anfield factor

These two teams have faced each other regularly over the last five years. Two finals and a quarter-final have all gone Los Blancos’ way.

Despite that, tonight will be the Spanish side’s first time playing in-front of a crowd at Anfield since 2009.

As plenty of Liverpool supporters will remember, that was one of those glorious Champions League nights at the old ground. Right from the start there was a feeling that Rafa Benitez’s Reds could do something special. And so it proved.

Two goals from Steven Gerrard and one each for Fernando Torres and Andrea Dossena sent Madrid packing. Yossi Benayoun’s late winner in the first-leg in Spain meant a 5-0 aggregate win for Liverpool.

Of course, it would be a major surprise if Jurgen Klopp could lead his team to a similar score line this time around. But you never know.

Anfield has seen off plenty of teams better than Carlo Ancelotti’s. They may be European champions, but Liverpool have yet another score to settle with them.

With 50,000 Reds roaring them on, players like Camavinga might be in for a little shock.

The player signed for £34m in 2021 has already achieved plenty in his short career so far. He’ll no doubt have the feeling he’s ready to face anything that European football can throw up. Let’s prove him wrong tonight, Reds.
