Pundit Steve Nicol has raved about Liverpool attacker Darwin Nunez, after his superb goal during the Reds’ 2-0 win over Newcastle United yesterday.
Speaking on ESPN FC, the Scotsman was full of praise for the 23-year-old, having claimed he doesn’t deserve the criticism he receives.
“Poor Darwin Nunez, people jump on his back for missing chances,” said Nicol.
“He sticks that away like a world-class striker – that I think he’s going to be.”
The Uruguay international got back to his scoring ways after bringing down a wonderful pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold, which he powerfully finished from close-range to give Liverpool the lead at St James’ Park.
Nicol full of praise for Nunez
The vast majority of the criticism hurled at Nunez this season has come from rival supporters. At Anfield, however, he is a cult favourite.
The striker has shown glimpses of pure brilliance since joining the club last summer. His unbelievable speed and great physicality have been hugely noticeable, and his menacing attacking style has been massively threatening to opposition defences.
People have been quick to slam Nunez’s finishing, as he has missed a couple of big chances this term.
However, he has also scored a number of excellent goals, and he took his chance against Newcastle confidently – smashing the ball into the back of the net.
This is great to see from the 23-year-old, who is still adjusting to his new team and his position in the side.
Nunez is greatly talented, and that is clear to see week-in week-out at Anfield.
Therefore, if he can continue to progress at the level he currently is, he will be a world-class striker in no time.
