Former Anfield hero Jamie Carragher has claimed Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo has an unusual profile for a wide player.
Speaking on Sky Sports last night, the former Reds defender suggested the 23-year-old could become like Joelinton, of Newcastle United.
This was in the sense that he now plays as more of a box-to-box midfielder, having previously been utilised up front.
“You see the actual size of him [Gakpo], you don’t normally see that,” Carragher said.
“The one person when you say that, that just comes to my mind and has been a revelation doing it, is probably Joelinton at Newcastle.
“He seems to have a similar sort of physique, whether he could go back into midfield, I’m not sure.”
Carragher thinks Gakpo could be like Joelinton
Whilst this is an interesting proposition by Carragher, Joelinton is of a much larger build, making him perfect to win the ball back in the middle of the park.
Gakpo is less defensively orientated. Instead, he prefers to pick up the ball from deep and drive at the opponents.
Therefore, it would be fair to suggest the Dutchman could look to replace Roberto Firmino in a Liverpool false-nine.
Ever since the Brazilian has demonstrated a decline in recent years, fans have always wondered who will take over his role in the team.
Diogo Jota has been the one player touted thus far, but Gakpo provides Jurgen Klopp with another fantastic option.
As Carragher says, Gakpo is an unusual size for a winger. This may work to his advantage in some cases, but it also implies he could be used in a more physical role as a deep-lying centre-forward.
